Apr 06, 2018 · We’ve shown you how to set up Time Machine on your Mac. It’s pretty easy to do when you’re just backing up to an external hard drive that’s connected directly to your computer. However, if you’d rather use your Synology NAS that’s connected to your local network, there’s a bit more work to do (but it’s still pretty easy).

Maybe I should clarify: my vision for this setup is that with a Mac having the Store and iTunes and its Library on my Synology NAS, I want to download HD copies of my Apple Store purchases, and unless the movie is 4K I would likely use not the cloud but instead the Synology. Most Synology NAS are designed for NAS not media server. Some Synology like a dual-bay DS216 has hardware-assisted 4k h.264/h.265 as it is geared towards media server. Since you are using your NAS for photos (which are invaluable data), you want it to be a reliable storage. If you find the mac address on the sticker on the back of the synology it has 12 numbers with no spacing. They must be arranged in the following order xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx If you access the mac address via system information you need to substitute the "-" for ":", that is instead of xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx, you need to input it as xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
